OTTAWA - Spring band concert
The 80th annual Ottawa High School spring band concert will be at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, in the OHS Auditorium. The OHS Wind Ensemble and OHS Symphonic Band will both perform. This is the last formal concert presented by the OHS concert bands this year.The program will include the premier performance of Jake Killelea's Into the Abyss. Killelea is an OHS senior and is completing an independent study in composition. Band camp and college scholarships will be awarded, the seniors will be recognized and the Arion Award will be given. The concert is free and open to the public.
OTTAWA - Caring and Sharing session
The National Alliance on Mental Illness will host its Caring and Sharing Session at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17, in the North Central Behavorial Health Services Office in Ottawa. SPRING VALLEY - Support group to meet
LaLeche League of the IV, a breastfeeding support group, will meet at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 17, in Spring Valley. EARLVILLE - 10th annual Cruise Night
The 10th annual Earlville Cruise Night will be held from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 19 in downtown Earville. Registration fee is $3, dash plaques will be given to the first 150 cars and 5 x 7 photos to the first 25 cars. MENDOTA - Pork chop lunch fund raiser
The Mendota Lutheran Home's ninth annual pork chop lunch fund raiser will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Friday, May 18, in the activity room. Carry-outs are available. One pork chop meal is $7 and a two pork chop meal is $8.50. A hot dog lunch is also available for $3. Please call in advance for any larger orders.
STREATOR - Night at the races
Easter Seals of LaSalle and Bureau Counites and Streator Knights of Columbus Post #790 will host a drawdown and Night at the Races on Saturday, May 19, at the Streator Knights of Columbus Hall, 806 Oakley Ave. Doors open at 5 p.m., the drawdown begins at 6 p.m. and the races starts at 7 p.m. Free food and draft soda will be available from 6 until midnight. Drawdown tickets are $10 each, with a limited of 1,000 tickets sold. There will be 17 monetary prizes awarded, nicluding one grade prize of $2,500; one $2,000; $1,500, $1,000 and $500 and 10 tickets of $50. MENDOTA - Steak fry
Mendota VFW Post 4079 will hold a steak fry from 5:30 until 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, at the post. This will be the last steak fry before summer. This fundraiser is open to the public, but reservations are required. Call 539-6466. Cost is $12 per person and includes a 14 ounce stak, baked potato, salad with all the fixings and other extras. Attendees may cook their own steak or have a member of the committee cook it for them. Walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are a good idea.
PERU - 13th annual Kids Fishing Expo
The 13th annual Kids Fishing Expo will be held from 9 a.m until 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, at Baker Lake in Peru. The expo is open to children age 6 and older and their families. The expo is a free beginning fishing "how-to" clinic for boys and girls. Bait will be provided and a limited number of fishing poles will be available for loan. No pre-registration is required. As children register on arrival, they will receive a packet, which contains an instruction sheet, a coupon for free food and drink and a ticket for any raffle or door prizes offered. There are nine separate stations, with 10 to 15 presentations at each. Children who complete six stations receive a prize. Children will learn to case, tie a knot, bait a hook, tie a fly, identify their catch, clean a fish and more. Call 220-3901 for more information.

LASALLE - Run for Life
Dawn's Apostle Creed X3 will host Run for Life, the 8th annual spring poker run on Sunday, May 20. The run, which leaves at 10:30 a.m. from Machelle's Backstreet, will be held rain or shine and all vehicles are welcome. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Cost is $15 per person. The run ends at Celebrations 150 in Utica with a buffet dinner. Last bike in at 5 p.m. Dinner is included in the price. There will also be a silent auction, 50/50 drawing and raffle.
LAMOILLE - Pancake and sausage breakfast
The LaMoille Lions Club will host an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 20. Proceeds from the breakfast will go to Relay for Life. The breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, eggs, ham, toast, milk, juice and coffee. Cost is $6 for adults, $4 for children 5 to 10 and free to kids 4 and under.
OTTAWA - Ski club to meet
The next meeting of the Rivercity Ski Club will be Monday, May 21, at the Starved Rock Yacht Club on Dee Bennett Road. Election of officers for the coming year will take place. Funds available for gas and electric bills
the Tri-County Opportunities Council's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program currently has funding to assist applicants with natural gas, propane, fuel oil and electric bills. In order to qualify, the applicant must provide proof of 30 day gross income for everyone in the household to ensure they are income eligible. There is also help for ComEd customers that may be in a hardship situation. Please call for details on this program. The guidelines do doffer from LIHEAP. LASALLE - Beers of Summer
The Beers of Summer beer tasting community benefit, sponsored by Rudy's Liquors and Peru Rotary Club, will be held from 6 until 8:30 P.M. on Friday, June 1, at Senica's Oak Ridge in LaSalle. The beer tasting will feature over 100 different beers, ales and malt beverage from around the world available for sampling. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Rudy's Liquor Store or from any Rotary member. Donation for th event is $20. All proceeds from the event will be donated and stay within the community. PRINCETON - Living Works Suicide Walk
The third annual Living Works Suicide Walk to raise money for additional trainings and education is set for Saturday, June 2, at Darius Miller Park in Princeton. Sign-in begins at 9 a.m. The walk starts at 10 a.m. and continues for two miles to Zearing Park where a closing ceremony will be held. There will be raffles, performances by the band 212, a balloon release and remarks by suicide survivors. Registartion by May 19 is required. Registration for individual walkers is $15. $10 each for groups of three or more and $500 or $250 for corporate sponsorships. Registrants will receive a t-sirt and bracelet. OTTAWA - A Trail Ride with a Twist
Camp Tuckabatchee will host A Trail Ride with a Twist on Sunday, June 3, at the camp in Ottawa. The even tis open to the public, and all riders and horses are welcome. Participants will ride through 150 acres of wooded trails with obstables through out the ride to challenge the rider and horse. Volunteer judges will score performances at each obstacle, and ribbons will be awarded at the end of the day. The concession stand will be open all day. No alcohol is permitted. PERU - Fun Run/Run Walk Health Expo
The Starved Rock Runners, Ltd. will host a Fun Run/Fun Walk Health Expo and Picnic at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 3, at Baker Lake in celebrate of the groups 30th anniversary. The event is free and open to the public. The afternoon will include exercise, healthy lifestyle information and a picnic, catered by HyVee. Food will be served from 1 until 3 p.m. Beginning at 12:30 p.m., Starved Rock Runners will lead groups around Baker Lake, either walking or running, at your pace, no pressure, no intimidation, just an enjoyable walk or run.
MENDOTA - School/sport physicals
Mendota Community Hospital is offering school/sport physicals Tuesday, June 5 and Tuesday, July 24. PRINCETON - Health screening offered
Perru Memorial Hospital is offering a health screening from 6:30 until :30 a.m. on Thursday, June 7, in the White Oak classroom at the hospital. A lipid profile test, which includes total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides will be offered at $25. The following other tests will also be offered: chemistry profile for $31; thyroid-TSH for $23; glucose for $9; hemogram for $9 and PSA for $33. MENDOTA - Cookout planned
The SHINE Youth Ministry of Holy Cross and Sts. Peter and Paul parishes will hold a cookout from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 30, in the Save-A-Lot parking lot in Mendota. Every year, Shine Youth Ministry of Holy Cross and Sts. Peter and Paul parishes sends a team of high school students to help underprivileged persons. The funds raised from the cookout will assist in the costs in providing this service.
PRINETON - Friends of Strays fund raiser
Friends of Strays, a no kill animal shelter in Princeton, is once again participating in the Birdies for Charity fund raiser through the John Deere Classic Golf Tournament. Forms for participating in this fundraiser are available at the shelter or by calling either 872-7387 or 866-2940. There is also a raffle for tickets for one day to get into the tournament which is July 9 through 15. Raffle tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5 and can be obtained by calling either of the above numbers. This is a fun and easy way to support Friends of Strays and you might have a chance to win a 2012 Chevy by guessing the correct number of birdies during this year’s tournament. ALL of the money pledged for Friends of Strays goes to the shelter as well as a match from the tournament itself. Pledges are due by June 15.
MENDOTA - Volunteers needed
The American Cancer Society Replay for Life of Upper Illinois Valley is seeking volunteers to serve during the July 14 and 15 event in some specific ways. Volunteers age 18 or older with a valid driver's license are needed to take a shift driving golf carts during the evening of the event to assist transporting participants who wish, or who need, transportation to and from various activities or sites of the event, such as their campsite, the entertainment areas, or food court, as well as for cancer survivors with special mobility needs during the Survivors' Laps. PRINCETON - PMH 60 Plus plans trip
The Perry Memorial Hospital 60 Plus Program is planning a bus trip to Lake Geneva, Wis. on Tuesday, July 24. The group will take a boat tour of Lake Geneva aboard the US Walworth, also known as the US Mailboat. The trip includes lunch and time to shop or explore Lake Geneva. PERU - Fundraiser for James King
Unite to Help Jim Fight, a benefit for James King, will be held from 4 until 11 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Peru Eagles Club. Tickets are $25 and include draft beer, soda and dinner. Dinner will be from 5 until 7 p.m. There will be a bag tournament from 4 until 6 p.m., a silent auction and raffles. King was diagnosed with colorectal cancer on February 27, 2012. Peru Library changes hours
The Peur Library is now open for service at 9 a.m. Monday through Saturday. The library's hours are not 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
PAW PAW - Volleyball summer league
The Paw Paw High School Volleyball Program will host a summer league for volleyball, and offering league play for junior high, junior varsity and varsity. Teams will be accpted as school teams, club teams or teams coached by a parent. Games will be slated in June, with a tournament the last weekend in June. Each team will play one game per week.
